That does not look good for the deer. Looks like as much a 20 miles from one positive to another and only one deer out side the are not positive. Hope the pending deer results are good.

These CWD focal area maps may be out of date now Y Hunt because I've seen reports where G&F employees said the whole state is now a CWD Focal Area. But .... I have yet to read an official G&F news release with that info, plus there's no mention of it in any of the weekly update meetings summaries....

I was expecting to see more testing results today. According to last weeks and this weeks Summary report 44 additional deer were collected for sampling. The 3-24-16 Summary shows a total of 264 deer collected in the Focal Area. Todays Summary shows a total of 263 deer collected in Focal Area. I reckon one got lost somewhere.

They are collecting road kills down here seriously. I called one in today just down from my house and it was sampled within 30 minutes. The two guys that came to collect it told me it was already the second one today and since last week they were getting about 4 a day. In this part of the world that seems like quite a few.

The road kill project I am told is statewide. What that means for a CWD zone I have no idea. The info from the meeting today other than a new map did not say much. That might mean the powers have not come up with anything because all the samples from up there are not back yet. :th_smilie_help.gif:

Do you think this could bring back check stations so they can take samples?

I know it has been mentioned but I personally do not see any other way to get hunter samples without a whole lot of trouble. There a lot of ideas being tossed around and your guess is a good as mine about what will be the final product.

Just purely to get an idea of how other's are doing it, here's the way Wisconsin does their hunter samples:

They set up sampling stations that include taxidermists, ranger stations, G&F offices, markets, and processors to name a few. Plus there are private for profit CWD state certified veterinarians statewide who can take a sample and get a hunter's animal tested in areas where there aren't any official sampling stations.

Statewide CWD sampling

CWD sampling will be offered at various locations throughout the state depending on the surveillance goals of that year. For a searchable list of all of the registration stations please view the registration station database.

Deer should be registered before being taken to a sampling station or hunters can use one of the stations which offers both sampling and electronic registration. Ideally, the samples should be taken as soon as possible after harvest. The samples needed for CWD testing are located near the base of the deer's skull and first several inches of neck. If the head/neck is kept at a refrigerated temperature (35°F to 45°F) it can be taken to a sampling station up to five days after harvest. If the time between harvest and sampling will be longer, then the head should be frozen until it can be taken in. When removing the head, a hand-width length of neck needs to remain in order to obtain the proper samples.

A deer that is going to have a shoulder mount done can still be tested for CWD. The deer should be registered, then taken to your taxidermist for caping and skull capping. Then the caped head can be brought to a cooperator for sampling. Please remember to follow all sample preservation guidelines in the paragraph above.

When the sample is taken in the hunter will be asked for some information including the following.
•Electronic registration number
•DNR customer number
•Contact information
•Location of harvest

Here is a deer from about 30 to35 miles South of the area. Makes you think.

I still have a camera out that I'm gonna be checkin' hopefully in the next few days. It's a little farther than 30 or 35 miles out but still close enough that from now on I'm gonna start keepin' a sharper eye out for dead and sick lookin' animals....

Also, like Wisconsin did I sure hope Arkansas makes it a priority in the immediate future, if not sooner, to certify willing veterinarians around the state for CWD sampling so hunters outside a known CWD area will have a place to take their animals for testing if they so choose.

I would really like to see a new statewide map of all the sample locations for positives, negatives and awaiting results. I am interested is knowing someone is still working this and not letting it slide again. Numbers would be good too.

I have heard that in May there are to be proposals about how AGFC is working things next fall. Sure would be nice to know what is planned for us up here in the target area.
