I noticed in the sampling efforts they did not state how many if any whitetails were infected.

Well maybe on the target. You got to figure that the easy ones are probably gone for the most part. Now comes the grind. I know there are more deer in that area than in the past and maybe I will be surprised. A whole lot depends on where and how much CWD shows up. I will be more comfortable if they were shooting some elk especially in those areas proven to send elk down into my part of the National Forest.

Their pets are to be confined , when one gets out of the area its either moved or put down ASAP they WILL NOT let them get far from the area never have. That being said if they'd let them go we might have a good hunting opprtunity like Kentucky

Are you suggesting AGFC has or is trapping or killing Elk to prevent them from expanding their range ??

when someone reports an elk outside of the core area there its not out of the pen long. Sam has even stated on these boards he's heard/seen a few elk being as far south as clinton but as soon as their seen/heard their there not much longer

There are two sources of wandering elk. Either they are from the wild herd along the Buffalo River or escaped and or released captives. Either one is not good in light of the CWD discovery. Fact CWD is in the elk of the river herd. No longer any doubt there. How bad is it we don't know because AGFC is not looking. A HUGE failure on their part. These wanderers have the potential to spread CWD everywhere they go shedding prions all along the way.

Captive escapes are a potentially worse problem. These are of unknown origin and health status. It is not unknown for high fence operators to intentionally release sick animals so they do not have to deal with the possible repercussions. I have seen fences that were in terrible shape and have seen deer going through them. No one is watching these places hard enough to get complete compliance. The good news is they are looked at more these days and a lot are depopulating voluntarily.

No matter what with CWD and other less threatening disease problems there is a need to confine the elk to where they are supposed to be. AGFC has and still is attempting to permit range expansion through the Bearcat Hollow project that with the arrival of CWD is an idea that the time has past on its being even a remotely good idea. The elk fan club has not given up though. The BS answer about not testing elk is plain evidence of that.

The above Summary doesn't completely gell with all the info released by G&F today but I think they deserve a pass considering how fast this thing has moved the last couple of days....

My information sources say a new plan is in the process right now. I am willing to bet the lights will be on late in the WMD office this evening.

Yeah no matter how I feel about Little Rock, I know the Wildlife Management Division right now has a lot on their plate and are workin' their tails off day and night tryin' to get a handle on this deal. That Division probably deserves a lot more credit in this than they're gettin' because we all know how prevalent politics are at G&F from the Administration on up, politics that the Wildlife Division has to cater to sometimes then ends up catching most of the blame from us hunters when things don't go our way....

Those red dots represent 20% of the animals that's been tested so far Y Hunt. G&F is still waitin' on the test results for over a hundred more animals from the CWD Focal Zone.
