CWD MAP
April 15,2016

I will take a guess and say most of these are road kills with a few target animals. Seems some areas are at it harder than others or maybe there are fewer road kills.

Yes twodog, very few "dots" in those south AR counties that have many more deer than we do up here in CWD Country. Are the folks down south rarely reporting roadkills ?

I would be willing to think that the people in the south that were not effected by the initial out break when it hit are less likely to respond as the people in the north have responded. But there are enough dots down south to make a statement of whether or not CWD is in the southern part of the state or not. :twocents:

I think photobucket is having problems tonight. I can't see the logo at the top of the page.

I'm sure it will be ok by morning.

When I first got involved in CWD years ago I was told that if you say you don't have CWD it is because you really don't or you have not looked. Arkansas has not been looking for about 7-8 years. At least not in a random sample sort of way. Now it has come home to roost.

Wonder if the experts can look at a topography map or even old harvest reports for population density and have any success whatsoever in predicting the most likely route CWD will spread from an initial focal area when it is spread by a free roaming animal then maybe concentrate any extra resources there?

It is not really a density related disease in that density does not determine where it will show up only in how easily it is transmitted among the cervids. With it showing up at London so far from the original area of discovery the question now is this an outshoot of disease started POSSIBLY by a carcass disposal from Arkansas or out of state? Is it possibly even the point of origin for Arkansas, which I doubt?

Next hunting season if hunter check samples are sampled heavily statewide then there may be able to find a point of origin and maybe even a source of origin but IMO that is a remote chance and really at this point does it matter. Containment is the challenge and we may be to late even for that. Next fall will provide some help I hope.

There is a new updated Phase 2 map and if I can figure out how to copy it over to this site I will.

I have also been informed that May 24th there will be a public meeting in Russellville concerning CWD and I am guessing related topics. I also think that this is in addition to the Jasper meeting.

I am concerned with counties with no samples and gaps in areas where I think it would be important to look. Like south newton and north Pope County. Others too. Just a casual observation seems like the effort in the south is not to much. I have to wonder why??????

Since CWD is on the north bank the Arkansas River I sure wish G&F would aggressively sample the south side of the river a few miles south into Yell and Logan Counties to find out whether it's crossed the river yet or not before they have to set new huntin' regs for next fall. With CWD literally on their doorsteps, only 3 deer have been tested in Yell County so far (the largest county in the state) and only 2 in Logan County.

I have a friend who believes it's already in Yell County. She says there was a young buck back last fall just across the Arkansas River on the south side in the Holla Bend area of Yell County near Carden Bottoms that was walking circles in the middle of Hwy 154, and that he was very skinny. She says she took it by an antler and led it out of the road then tried for an hour or more to get a AGFC person to come out and "take care of it." No one ever showed up, so a county deputy came out and put it out of it's misery. She said the next day a AGFC person called and was upset that it was shot. They knew where the deer was but to her knowledge they never tested it. She's worked around deer and other wildlife all her adult life and she said this particular deer showed all the signs of CWD....

Thanks for putting this nice map out here. Like seeing the yellows thru to green. Yes there are lots of gaps and areas that need to be filled in. Strong correlation of the red dots and the areas where elk live but too early to really tell. glad they are putting the dots close to the actual locations. Guess we will have to wait for more tests to give us a stronger data set
