Post #1  Post subject: The hardest thing I have ever done was say goodbye

My old friend for the past 16 years life ended his run on Monday. Kitty Frank is gone we had him put to sleep on Monday afternoon, I have had a lot of pets over the years but never had to put one down. Kidneys failed and he was going downhill fast this past couple weeks. We knew it was coming since last November when his vet gave us the news. We managed to keep him going with special food and vet visits for B12 shots and IV fluids but in the end it was just not enough. He quit eating and drinking and would sleep 23 1/2 hours a day. Would try and make the litter box but failed a few times. You could tell he was in pain when trying to move. At one time he weighed 23 pounds and was down to 6 1/2. He is being cremated today and will be placed in the ground between the wife and myself in our family plot with his own grave marker. Nothing more than a simple foot stone with his name and a kitty face the wife picked out.
For those who have cats one thing the vet noticed on his weekly Friday visit last Friday was him smacking his mouth with a popping sound. Vet told us that happens near the end when due to the kidneys failing total they get ulcers in their mouth making it hard to eat without pain so if you notice that be aware. Kidneys failing is the number one killer of cats of age.

My folks have two cats they got as kittens 17 years ago they both are slipping. 16 or 17 years is about the best you can hope for with an indoor cat, outdoors they only average about 8 years. It's hard. My condolances.

We lost one about 10 years ago. They are nice to have around house. Sorry to hear of your loss.

Sorry about this. Losing a pet is tough. I have had to put down two Chocolate labs both were very tough to do. When they are living in pain and the light of loving life is out of their eyes it is the kindest thing to do but it does not make it any easier.

This is about dogs but it is applicable to all pets

A Dog's Plea

Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I would lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me learn.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world’s sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when you footstep falls upon my waiting ear.

Please take me inside when it is cold and wet, for I am a domesticated animal no longer accustomed to bitter elements. I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.

Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side and stand ready , willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.

And, my friend, when I am very old, and I no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having any fun. Please see that my trusting life is taken gently. I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath I draw that my fate was always safest in your hands.

Sorry Duster. It's a tough experience to go through. In fact as I got older it became tougher and tougher on me, like losing a young child every few years. So after I lost my last pet back in 02 I decided he would be my last because I had finally arrived at the point where I was no longer willing to go through the experience of losing another one...

I almost felt the same way WW after I had to put my Max down in 2015. After about a year I really got to missing having a dog. Got to where I could hardly stand to go out in the yard it felt so lonely. So I started looking and found another chocolate lab that had been abandoned. He was sick and at the vets getting well. Long story short about a month after I found him or he found me however you look at it Chip came home with me and I do not regret it one second. He loves to ride in the truck stays close at hand all the time and is my new buddy. Best behaved dog I have ever had. God had to have sent him to me.

Pets do have a way of making themselves part of the family, don't they.

Sorry for the loss of your kitty Duster. Never easy to lose a pet. I lost my TinTin a few months ago when a car hit him, and he was withme for over 2 years. We still have another cat, but the void is still there.
