After just 3 days of season the quota is full.
This is poor management of the bear in zone 1 and a big disadvantage to the public land hunter.
They need to set aside a few bear quota numbers for public land in zone 1 or allow bait on public land.
The zone has to much public land for proper management under the current plan. And public land bear hunters need more than three days to have a chance to kill a bear.
I don't know what to expect after all it is the Arkansas Game and Fish.

I just posted a question in another area of the forum, but this might be a better spot. Anyone know if the Dallas county area will be having a bear hunt anytime soon? Man we have been seeing a lot of bear.

I agree wholeheartedly. It is completely biased towards bowhunters that have access to private land. More of the quota needs allocated to public land and also give a piece of the pie to muzzleloader hunters. I think maybe it is time to overhaul this whole concept but as most of the powers are bowhunters don't expect anything to happen.

I bowhunt some and have harvested one Arkansas bear in my life although I'm not a bear hunter. But seems to me though, without me having access to any stats, that since the quota was filled in such a short time a high proportion of the quota could have been taken on private land over bait which means like Y hunt implied that the overall zone possibly isn't bein' properly managed.

Whatever the case, 3 days seems extraordinarily fast for bow hunters to be taking 207 bear even with bait and I'm wondering if private land hunters and/or DMAP hunters are also being allowed to bait and harvest bear with a firearm during bow season?

Be nice if Commissioners would direct the Agency to split the quota evenly between bowhunters, muzzleloaders, and firearms hunters, plus have the Agency come up with a more equable bear management plan for public land as compared to private land.

I am not a bear hunter. Not saying I would not. I just do not have access to any private land that have bear.

I am glad I am not the only one that is questioning the management. I do have a buddy that hunts zone 1 area and the last three years had several chances to kill a bear in both bow and ML seasons, but quota is always filled. I know he is not happy with the current management.

Bowhunters have got this baiting thing figured out up here. When the season opened later after acorn drop baiting was less effective so now we have a little early opener before acorn drop gets going. This year the acorn crop is spotty and the farther north you go it seems the less there is. I am not surprised at all that it was over in three days. Similar early closures have happened more times than not. I am not a bear hunter either and have passed several chances to kill bears in the past. I am not saying I would pass up a real humongous bear but I am not going looking for it either.
The current setup is totally for the bowhunter with access to private land. The public land gun hunter is more or less left out of the picture. The gun season is late enough that bears are either on acorns heavy or staying close to den sites all of which makes baiting less productive.
IMO AGFC personnel making the bear proposals are catering to their personal preferences relative to bowhunting. :twocents:

DMAP deer clubs are not supposed to shoot bears with guns. Not saying it does not happen as it surely does but I don't think it is real widespread. Could be wrong here because really who knows.

I agree with most of what has been said above.

Y hunt, if you hunt your Yell Co. and south (Zone 2) there is no quota and you can hunt the whole season.

Tony you are correct about zone 2. I know where a guy would have a good chance at a bear in zone 2, but I am not willing to do what it would take to get it out. That is why I said I am not a real bear hunter. If you are a true public land bear hunter you should put your efforts into zone 2 for that reason. I just feel for the guys that hunt the Ozarks on public land. I do not even hunt there so it does not really apply to me.
I am after deer first and willing to put in the effort for them.

in this case, only the lucky hunters make fortune. not that if a hunter didn't hunt down a deer within three days that he is a looser!
