Well hunting out West bit me last year. What I thought was a once in a lifetime hunt has turned into a do what ever it takes to get back. So I came up with a plan. I was wanting to take my son that will be 15 this fall. The big problem is football is his true love. Football season runs till November the 1st. Most Wyoming units close October 31st or sooner. So I began to research. A couple units are open till November 30th. They are all limited access for public land and I don't want to pay for access. The other problem is bucks start dropping the horns in November. So I came up with a plan. Mom will not hear of missing school so I plan to go the week of Thanksgiving. I called the local warden and confirmed antelope will be in the areas we can hunt. He said yes and numbers will be high as they are wintering areas. He also said everyone quits hunting the area October 31st and we would not see any other hunters. He said the challenge would be to find a good buck still holding his horns. I talked to my son about this and he said he would be happy just to get to go. He said he would be excited to get a doe.
So I tell the wife what I am planning. She says if you go over Thanksgiving break I would like to go with you. She does not want to shoot anything but tag along. I know the chance at a buck will be slim. I decided to enter my boy for an any antelope and a doe/fawn tag and I entered for two doe/fawn tags. That way if we do find a buck he can shoot it.
It looks like we should draw the tags, but it is a draw and anything can happen. I am excited at the chance to get back out West.

Don't get much better than a family antelope hunt. My kids were raised doing just that every year!
Good luck to ya!!

Hey Tony,
What are the chances of finding a decent buck still holding horns in the Sheridan area around Thanksgiving?

I have harvested 2 bucks during the late season (December) that still had horns. This was in Casper area, which is not very far from Sheridan.

That is great news. Thanks Tony. If he gets a nice buck I won't make the same mistake of not saving the cape.
